They also differ widely depending on the setting (academic, group practice, solo practice) , number of work hours put in, etc. The salary of interventional cardiologist is usually higher than of non-interventional cardiologist.

How to Become a Cardiologist in USA ?

To become a Cardiologist in America, the candidate must do a three-year Cardiology Fellowship after a 3 year Residency in Internal Medicine. After the Cardiology fellowship, the candidate further becomes eligible for other super-specialties like Interventional Cardiology.

NOTE: Fellowship in Cardiology is one of the most competitive fellowships after Internal Medicine residency. And it’s very hard for IMGs to get into.

4 Years of Premedical College + 4 years of medical School + 3 years of Residency in Internal Medicine followed by a 3 Year fellowship in Cardiology. Often there could be a wait for a year before the fellowship to gain some research experience. Further training like Interventional Cardiology will take 1 to 2 years more.

Which makes it a total of at least 14 years after High School for American Medical Graduates. On the other hands, for an International Medical Graduates (IMGs), it will be another 6 years after completing Medical schooling in home country.
