A Geriatrician is a doc who specializes in the care of old people - since old people have special needs . How to Become a Geriatrician in the USA ?

Geriatrics can be done as a 2-year fellowship after completing a residency in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and even Psychiatry.

The need for Geriatricians is very high in America, but the number of geriatrics physicians is not keeping up with the need. By the year 2030, we expect a baby-boomer 60-plus aged people crisis. Read why despite the promise of high demand, Geriatrics Salaries continue to be low. Another great article I read was "Why it's so hard to find a doctor for mom and dad"

To encourage medical students and residents to take up geriatrics, states are coming up with programs such as medical school loan forgiveness to ease up some financial pressures. An example is the Geriatrics fellowship program at University of South Carolina

NOTE: Salaries here are the 50th Percentile Salaries and may apply to mid-career levels - the lower percentile salaries (for fresh physicians) may actually be lower by 30,000- 40,000 $.

  1. With all due respect. It is probably one of the lowest salaries a doctor can earn. It is mostly 1 year of fellowship too unless you want to do another year of research.
